Common Thyroid Problems and Their Symptoms

The thyroid is a gland situated under Adam’s apple at the base of the neck. A healthy thyroid is small and invisible and it produces hormones that regulate metabolism. The thyroid gets enlarged when there is an underlying condition, causing some discomfort while breathing and swallowing. Nearly 15 million Americans have an undiagnosed thyroid condition.
Find out more about the common thyroid problems and their symptoms below:

Hypothyroidism

This happens when the thyroid does not produce enough hormones, and it slows down the metabolism of the patient. Women are more likely to suffer from hypothyroidism than men. In addition to an enlarged thyroid (goiter), other symptoms of this condition include constant fatigue, constipation, cold, depression, and forgetfulness.

Hyperthyroidism

This condition is not as common as hypothyroidism and it is caused by the thyroid producing too much hormones. It speeds up the patient’s metabolism, giving them more energy. However, their body breaks down quickly and they get tired easily. Hyperthyroidism also manifests as goiter, and other symptoms include sudden bursts of energy followed by extreme fatigue, a rapid pulse, irritability, hand tremors, nervousness, muscle weakness, weight loss, etc.

Thyroid Nodules

Nearly 50% of adults over the age of 60 have thyroid nodules, a condition where lumps grow on the thyroid. There is no clear cause of thyroid nodules, there are no symptoms, and it is mostly harmless. However, if they become overactive, nodules may lead to hyperthyroidism. Also, some nodules may be cancerous.

If you are over 60 years old, ask your doctor to check for thyroid nodules during your next check-up. Residents of Cypress, Texas should visit Cypress Family Clinic for all thyroid problems. Call 832-786-4652 to make an appointment.
